About the book
'Gritty, disturbing, often uncomfortable, terse, controlled, aggressive, lyrical, Martin Mooney, at his best, extends the boundaries of what is and is not appropriate subject matter for poetry.' - Sinéad Morrissey
Belfast from Space: New and Selected Poems draws from more than thirty years of work by a distinctive voice in contemporary Irish poetry. From his debut Grub, winner of the Brendan Behan Memorial Prize and shortlisted for the Forward Prize for a first collection, to The Resurrection of the Body at Killysuggen, Mooney has been driven by a fierce engagement with ordinary speech and popular culture, as well as high art and an exploratory poetics.
As Baron Wormser wrote in his introduction to the US edition of Grub:
Martin Mooney's poems are darkly comic, muscular, inventive and highly charged. Politics simmer beneath the surface of poems that find their energy in the everyday urban experience, be it work at the shipyards, an early morning fishing expedition, the building of houses, or a visit to the local pub.
