Derek Mahon is one of the finest poets of our time.

Though somewhat overshadowed by his contemporary, Seamus Heaney, his work is remarkable for its lucidity, wit and melodic gift.

In poem after poem he returns to the same themes: the exilic imagination, the significance of art and the poetics of waste.

In this book Christopher Steare argues that it is time to look more closely at this impressive body of work. Those new to Derek Mahon will find this a helpful and illuminating guide.

About the author:

Christopher Steare read English at Queens’ College, Cambridge. He has since taught English at various secondary schools. He is also a published poet whose work has appeared in a number of magazines, including The Fornightly Review, Acumen, Envoi and The Spectator.
